What is the biggest challenge you face in your role?

I have used Whiteboard.fi over the last few months to help manage teaching classes of 30 students whilst being based as the teacher, at home. I wanted to use a platform that made the lessons feel as similar as possible to in-school learning from the students' point of view and as reassuring as possible from my point of view to mitigating all the other technological uncertainties that teachers were managing lesson, by lesson.

How did you originally discover Whiteboard.fi?

During the first few months of this academic year, I tried, along with other colleagues, many different platforms and this is the one that I chose and I am delighted to have made that choice. No regrets!

What are your main scenarios and objectives for using Whiteboard.fi?

Before a lesson, I can prepare the skeleton of what the hour-long lesson will look like. For students with special needs, the slides can then be easily pdf-ed and sent in advance. This makes the lesson feel very familiar when I annotate them during the discussion of the lesson. Used in conjunction with a platform for sharing the skeleton and annotated whiteboards before and after a lesson, for all students, makes reviewing ideas afterward, including for students who missed a lesson, really easy.

Having been working in-school for many months, where at 5 minutes notice the lesson may need to be live-streamed for students who had been set home, I wanted to have a set-up which I would be using in the classroom day to day as normal and then the addition of joining the lesson remotely would pose no additional burden for the students or for me. Using Whiteboard.fi is now my normal way of working, having written on a whiteboard in the classroom for 25 years."

What is the best thing about using Whiteboard.fi in a classroom setting?

When I write on Whiteboard.fi my handwriting looks like it does on a real whiteboard. I am never without a board pen (as long as I have my graphics tablet!). Students appreciate being able to 'go back a page' - once a static whiteboard is wiped, there's no going back.

What overall improvements have you seen with Whiteboard.fi?

It was a great step forward when 'folders' were introduced so that I could store the different whiteboards for different classes. I would be delighted to see folders within folders in the future.

List some improvements you have recorded. For example, have your students' grades improved?

Students commented after remote learning 'your lessons have been the most like normal lessons'.

How would you feel if you could no longer use Whiteboard.fi? Why?

I would feel completely wrong-footed and underprepared to cope with the various scenarios thrown our way each day1

Before Whiteboard.fi, which solutions did you use for those scenarios, and what was challenging?

In a classroom before covid, I would have written on the static whiteboard in the classroom which then would be lost afterward. In summer 2020 I tried using several other types of other software, but Whiteboard provides the smoothest writing surface with no glitches. The variable writing width and eraser options are in my opinion the best that I have found.

What do your students love most about Whiteboard.fi?

Using the 'push' function to engage students during remote learning was fantastic. Whilst they didn't have a graphics tablet to write with like I did, their mouse could draw lines to link items together. The speed at which this was happening meant that they didn't have time to communicate out of my sight about the 'right' answer and so I felt that I got a more genuine snapshot of what they could individually do. I used the saved evidence from this to help for judgements about levels of progress.

What would you recommend to other teachers who are only starting to use Whiteboard.fi?

  • Label the names of your whiteboards using a future-proof and clearly thought-through system that enables you to find them easily.
  • Don't try to write too much on each screen.
  • Leave occasional blank pages to cope with unplanned asides.

What are your favorite Whiteboard.fi features and why?

I love the eraser and the cleanness of the writing pen. Also, the push function when students are working on a computer.

 I enjoy the fact that this is web-based and so I can prepare a whiteboard at home and then access it at school.

What is the biggest challenge you face in your role?

One of the challenges in the virtual space, particularly with diverse learners, is being able to provide effective visuals while checking for understanding. While visuals are extremely beneficial to the strategies we use in mathematics, it was a great fit to add Whiteboard.fi as a resource to the digital classroom. My students are able to share their work with classmates and we can revise work as needed, which provides a great opportunity for discourse in the digital classroom. Whiteboard also goes hand-in-hand with my lesson plans and has been a great supplement to the overall math class.

I am a veteran teacher with 27 years of experience using mainly paper/pencil format for notes, practice, and assessment for math. As a first-time fully virtual teacher it was a challenge to engage students and help them individually through our Google Meets. Technology advanced through this school year and my investigation into products revealed new ways to communicate and help. It was necessary for me to be flexible and empathetic to my students' circumstances as well as a complete change in my instruction, formative assessment and summative assessment of student learning.

What is the best thing about using Whiteboard.fi in a classroom setting?

The students love the fact that I can join their board individually to answer and redirect work in a confidential way (they are not embarrassed by asking a question aloud in our meet or others knowing they are being helped).

What overall improvements have you seen with Whiteboard.fi?

I started using the Whiteboard.fi early this year and "free". I like the paid subscription because I could set up classes with a link that was pasted into their Google Classroom. Students were able to join the class easily each time. I also like that I can join their board individually. We discovered the math equation editor which helped when wanting to type answers instead of using a mouse/pen. I liked using the "thumbs up" or "heart" to quickly give feedback when students were right. The library allowed me to save questions to use during other blocks of the same subject. Student's felt good when I could share their board on my screen to show how to correctly work out a problem using their example. As a class warm-up, I would have students draw, use emojis or write what was on their mind so that they could let me know how they were feeling. This helped the students bond and helped me to identify the emotional climate before beginning the practice.

List some improvements you have recorded. For example, have your students' grades improved?

Student's practice improved because they were able to ask a question confidentially and were given feedback immediately. Students were also able to work at their own pace since I could give a remedial question or challenge question individually. The summative test scores improved overall as well.

How would you feel if you could no longer use Whiteboard.fi? Why?

Next year I plan to use Whiteboard.fi within my in person classroom. With Whiteboard.fi I can view many student's work at one time, instead of only a few as I walk around the room while they use individual whiteboards with markers. Without Whiteboard.fi, I would have to rely on proximity and would not have the ability to give as much feedback including positive praise.

Before Whiteboard.fi, which solutions did you use for those scenarios, and what was challenging?

Before Whiteboard.fi I used actual individual-sized whiteboards. This was fine in that I could see the students all work one problem out at the same time and view while walking around the room. Students learned to view other's work and rely on peer accuracy, instead of relying on themselves. It was challenging because some would get finished quickly and become bored while waiting for me to help a few. Now I can move those students onto the next question while still spending time with those who need it. Student's that needed help felt embarrassed to have me beside them while now I can do so in the confidence of their own screen.

What do your students love most about Whiteboard.fi?

The students enjoyed the confidentiality allowed by using the whiteboard online instead of in front of them in the classroom. They commented on how they benefited from my ability to join their board and correct/answer their questions individually.

What would you recommend to other teachers who are only starting to use Whiteboard.fi?

After trying the free version and the upgraded version the difference was necessary! Students were able to be divided into classes, the library made it easier to use the same materials for multiple blocks, and the ability to "jump into" the individual student's board made all the difference for me as the instructor and progress of the student learning. Copy and pasting from a problem using the "snipping" tool made questions easily accessible on the teacher's board.

I love pushing a template forward as a background to all students, giving them time to work, and then highlighting their strategies by clicking on their individual boards so that we can quickly share work. I like that I can then save boards all at once to a pdf for future evaluation.

It is a quickly setup and quickly learned platform for sharing ideas.

I honestly would be disappointed. The convenience of having "chrome ready" students hop on quickly and immediately show their work is a great convenience and allows for immediate instructional decision-making.

Before Whiteboard.fi, which solutions did you use for those scenarios, and what was challenging?

Sharing work via other applications required taking pictures of student's work. It's doable but takes longer.

What do your students love most about Whiteboard.fi?

Immediate communication and feedback is definitely the highlight for students. They enjoy communicating with me by writing me notes before the lesson even begins. They are happy to know that I will still have a copy of their work after they exit the platform.

What would you recommend to other teachers who are only starting to use Whiteboard.fi?

  1. Definitely share your slides as background (flatten) whenever possible.
  2. Have students log in immediately as loading may take time depending on your setup.
  3. Have guidelines for sign-in names. Let students know what you are comfortable with from the get-go. Will you hide names? Are you OK with school-appropriate nicknames, etc.
  4. Be aware that a blank board may mean a student has opened a second board. Their work may be complete, but you can only see their current board."

I would find it difficult. Returning to turn taking requires a lot more time. It would also not allow me to help as many students, since I would not be able to keep tabs on where their problems are. A lot of students don't like to ask for help. This allows me to see they need help, even when they don't ask for it.

Finding the time to help them before they were done. Finding ways to keep others behavior in check while they "waited their turn".

What is the biggest challenge you face in your role?

Student engagement and accountability has been the biggest challenge. Some of the students are actively participating while others who struggle simply wait for others to respond to questioning. Working in a school district in which each student has their own Chromebook has created additional challenges because students have the entire internet to distract themselves with. Being able to provide quality feedback on work had also been a challenge this year because students were working on their Chromebook versus physical whiteboards or pieces of paper.

How did you originally discover Whiteboard.fi?

I heard about whiteboard through a conference with other local school districts. A teacher spoke about how much it has helped with student engagement.

What are your main scenarios and objectives for using Whiteboard.fi?

I use Whiteboard.fi for guided practice in mathematics. I use the curriculum exercises and insert them as images on Whiteboard.fi. I model some of the parts of the exercise and then send it to student's whiteboards for them to finish. I am able to better assess how well students are grasping a concept and which individual students will need more instruction. It also provides students with the ability to see multiple approaches to a problem that have been generated by their peers.

What is the best thing about using Whiteboard.fi in a classroom setting?

I absolutely love Whiteboard.fi as a tool for math instruction. Students are able to work out problems so that I am able to see where misconceptions are occurring. The built in tools make it so that no other programs compare. I can provide feedback via a thumbs up, thumbs down, or heart, as well as detailed and specific feedback. I am able to share student's work to show students different ways of completing a problem. I also really enjoy how easy it is to join a student's whiteboard and provide direct guidance. The shape and line tools allow us to work with geometry concepts. There is a variety of colors and fonts. In addition, the students love emojis and we are able to use them in a variety of contexts.

 The new features to organize saved whiteboards into folders has helped me to organize individual units for classes so I am able to go back and reuse lessons in the future.

What overall improvements have you seen with Whiteboard.fi?

Whiteboard has drastically improved since I have been using it. The ability to go into students' whiteboard sessions and provide more direct feedback and guidance is invaluable. I am also a huge fan of the new and improved organization of saved whiteboards. Being able to create folders for individual units and classes has saved a lot of time!

If some of the improvements can be highlighted with numbers, please share! For example, have your students' grades improved?

My students' grades have improved as they have increased engagement and accountability. With remote students, I am able to ensure an increase in on-task behavior as you are able to see what they are doing in real-time. I am able to more quickly prompt students who are not working all by looking at one screen!

How would you feel if you could no longer use Whiteboard.fi? Why?

I would need to use several applications to replace Whiteboard.fi and would find it to be extremely inconvenient. My students would likely be disappointed as well, as they enjoy being able to share their work with others.

Before Whiteboard.fi, which solutions did you use for those scenarios, and what was challenging?

I used Nearpod in the past but it is quickly editable. When I am working with students and find that they need more practice with a type of math problem I am quickly able to create an additional slide and send it to the students. With other similar programs, you have to edit it before students use the join code. Whiteboard is much more easily accessible.

Another platform was also given as a potential solution but I did not find it as easy to use on short notice and it is not as easy for students to join.

What do your students love most about Whiteboard.fi?

My students love all of the different tools, color options, emojis, and the ability to insert images. They enjoy being able to share their work. Most of all they like getting individual feedback and can't wait to get their thumbs up or heart.

What would you recommend to other teachers who are only starting to use Whiteboard.fi?

  1. Use it for guided practice. Providing different amounts of scaffolding before you send them the exercise to complete on their own will help guide them towards working independently quicker.
  2. Share students individual responses to keep them accountable and engaged. Students enjoy sharing and explaining their work.
  3. Use the feedback options. Students enjoy getting thumbs up or the heart feedback. You can also type more specific feedback.
  4. Play creative games. My students love making pictures using the emojis. It provides an incentive for them to finish their work so they can make pictures with their emojis while they are waiting for others to finish.

What are your favorite Whiteboard.fi features and why?

My favorite features are the ability to quickly insert math problems or images to share with my students.

The tools are extremely useful in producing clear examples of how to complete a problem.

The ability to share other student's work provides a way to show students multiple approaches easily while praising students for their unique ways of thinking.

Students who have made mistakes can also receive feedback and suggestions from peers.

Joining a student session allows me to help students who are really struggling.

Finally, the tools such as the shapes, straight lines, backgrounds, and color options are far more extensive than any other application.

You can now register or login through Clever.com. Your Clever classes are automatically synchronized to Whiteboard.fi, and the students joining your room are authenticated through Clever.

Improved multiple room functionality
You can now have multiple rooms open simultaneously. Together with the new Assignments feature, you can assign homework for different classes and receive answers even if you are not present as a teacher in the room.
This update also changes the old Persist functionality, as your whiteboards are now stored automatically for each room. Old persisted whiteboards can be found from your library. Please notice that the teacher whiteboard is wiped after 14 days of inactivity. You can preserve your teacher whiteboard content permanently by saving it in your library.

Improved Library Sharing
Library items can now be shared with a link, in additional to a library sharing code. The link can easily be shared in social media - and we're excited to see what kind of whiteboards you have created! We will also soon release a set of official and verified shared library items - stay tuned!

We are super excited to release another revolutionary feature that you have been waiting for - Assignments!

New feature: Assignments
You can now give assignments to students in your room. This works like the push, but lets the students load and work on the assignments in their own pace. When they have completed the assignment, they can submit it and you get an overview of all submissions.
When using permanent rooms, you can use assignments to give homework to your students. The students can access your permanent room, load and submit the assignments even if you as a teacher are not present in the room. This opens up to a lot of new possibilities, and together with the new Math tool we're sure you'll find many use cases - please let us know on social media!

The submissions can be deleted based on submission date, or are automatically deleted after 30 days.

Improved math tool
The math tool has been completely redesigned and many new features have been added, including equations, graphs, angles, boxes, pie charts, a ruler and protractor. You can now select a math object and edit it, which opens up for many new use cases.

  • New virtual keyboard for easily inserting equations.
  • Graph: insert graphs and edit their appearence.
  • Angle: easily insert angles in degrees or radians.
  • Boxes: insert a grid of boxes of a given size.
  • Ruler: insert a ruler to measure objects.
  • Protractor: insert a ruler to measure objects and angels.

Improved polygon tools
You can now insert a polygon with different number of corners. Also, we've added an Arrow tool and a Shape brush, making it easier to draw different shapes.

General improvements
Loads of general improvements under the hood have been made.

This update includes a few bug fixes, improvements to the Library and the possibility to choose data center! See the Release Notes for a full list of changes.

EU Data Center Opened
We have now opened our EU data center for European users! When creating a new free room or when registering, you can choose where you want your data to be stored. Existing users can change the storage location from their user settings (top right user menu from the teacher dashboard, see this article for more information).

Library Improvements
You can now arrange your saved whiteboards into folders in your library, and when inserting from the library you can choose to append instead of replace. You can find more information about using the library in this support article.

Multiple rooms
Multiple rooms are now supported, when on the Premium subscription plan! If you want to persist your teacher whiteboard when using multiple rooms, you have to save it using the new Persist button.

There is a new Account settings page, where you can edit the teacher display name and delete your account.

Join student live session
You can now join the student whiteboard session and draw / make notation directly on the student's whiteboard!
When you join a student session, you collaborate on the same whiteboard and you can see each other's cursors. You can view all the student pages (and download them as PDF if needed), and you can give feedback for specific pages.

This feature is included in the Premium subscription plan.

Search and filter students
You can now search and filter student whiteboard list by student name. The student list is also sorted more naturally (when using upper and lower cases).

This update includes some small improvements, as well as the possibility to purchase monthly subscriptions.

Monthly subscription options added
You can now choose between monthly or annual subscription.

Pan tool added
A pan tool has been added to the toolbar, so that you can more easily move around when zoomed in.

Lines can now be dashed or dotted
When creating lines, circles or polygons, the lines and border lines can now be solid, dotted or dashed.

Erase background separately
You can now erase the background while keeping the foreground.

Timeout behaviour improved
There were some occurences of connection timeouts while typing longer texts. This has now been fixed.

Canvas improvements
Loads of general improvements in the whiteboard canvas, including better scaling when pasting large images.

This update fixes some minor bugs and changes the behaviour of the trial period. Coming next, is the possibility to draw on student whiteboards.

Trial behvaiour changed
We have updated the behaviour of the trial period, so that it is automatically applied upon registration. During the trial period of 7 days, you can test the premium functionality. You can, either during or after the trial period, purchase the Basic or Premium subscriptions, or attach a license key purchased by your organization.

Library resolution updated
Old library items, stored using the old resolution, are now applied on the larger resolution. This means they might show up smaller on your whiteboard, but you can easily resize them in your library (by selecting everything and stretching out) and save again. This change was done in order to support better quality images.

Fixed some bugs
Some small bugs were fixed, including co-teaching library loads and push improvements.

Give feedback to students
You can now give feedback to students in different ways: write a comment, give quick like or thumbs up or down icons. The student will receive a popup notification with the feedback. Both the student and the teacher can see previous feedbacks and a small thumbnail of the whiteboard of the time of the feedback.

You find the feedback buttons under the student whiteboard in the student popup. Please note, that this is a subscription feature and requires a premium subscription (currently in beta testing).

Coming up, is the possibility to join a live student session and draw directly on the student's whiteboard!

Subscription licenses
In addition to the FREE plan we now have BASIC and PREMIUM plans available, with loads of new features.

Teacher accounts
For the subscription plans, teacher accounts are required to manage your room, library or subscription.

Co-teaching
You can now invite a co-teacher to your Whiteboard room! The co-teacher sees the same as you, can follow the student progress and you can collaborate on the same whiteboard.

Permanent rooms
You can now create permanent room URLs with your own custom room code. This enables you to keep the same link over the whole semester, for easy sharing with your students. The permanent room can be emptied and closed on demand.

Upload PDFs
When you upload a PDF to your whiteboard, the pages are transformed in to different pages and merged into the background. This way, you can let your students make notations or draw on your PDF or slideshow.

Give feedback to student by drawing on the student whiteboard, or by giving quick feedback icons or messages.

Choose visible page

Erasing on a vector isn't really what you normally would do, but we reintroduced an alternative eraser tool where you draw using the background color. You can still move objects around, including the erased path, but this should meet your eraser tool expectations.

IP Addresses and Hostnames
You can now view individual student's IP addresses and hostnames. This can be handy in case of abuse. You can find this information when opening a student whiteboard and clicking the Action button. Note: We don't store this information, so it's available for your session only.

"...but what about the Simple Editor? And where's the Eraser tool!?"
It was time to retire the simple editor, as it no longer fulfilled today's standards. This was also done in order to provide a more streamlined user experience.
As we are working with vectors, there is no place for an eraser in the standard sense. As we draw vectors, you can select them, delete them, resize or rotate them. So in case of a mistake, you can either delete the vector or use the new Undo button.

A new engine has been installed under the hood! This makes everything run much smoother. We've also introduced a few new features (including music sheets), and reworked the layout a bit moving action buttons to a new toolbar below the whiteboard.
Also, you can now choose to clear only the foreground, keeping the background unchanged. This is especially handy if you're making notations on a background image, and wish to clear it without removing the background. Check out all the new features below!

Action buttons have been moved to a new toolbar, and you can now clear the foreground separately.

View user status
You now see icons after the user name, indicating if the user has left the room (a closed door ) or if the user is disconnected/inactive (a user icon with a slash ).

QR codes to join room
QR codes are now available, for easily letting your students join your room.

You can now save all your student whiteboards as a PDF file! You can find the new feature under the main gear menu (look for "Save all whiteboards as PDF"). You can choose whether you wish to include the teacher whiteboard or not, and you can add a custom note that will be saved in the header of the PDF. The current time and date will automatically be added.

You can now insert mathematical text, symbols or equations using the new Insert math-functionality! This new feature is available for both teachers and students (if insert images is enabled for students). There has also been some minor improvements to the push functionality, making it more stable on slow connections, as well as some general bug fixes.

Insert math using a simple graphical editor or by using LaTeX code. The math is inserted into the canvas as an image, and can be moved around and resized.
