Celebrating the impending arrival of a baby is a great reason for the friends, family, and colleagues of the mum-to-be to get together. If you're organising a baby shower and looking for some unique games to ensure everyone has a fun time, check out our traditional and modern baby shower game ideas to make it an event to remember. Some of these ideas might also help you choose your party's personality, but they're all great no matter what the theme of the shower. Icebreaker Games

1. Guess Who?

What you'll need:

• Baby photo of each guest, numbered

• Numbered blank lists, one for each guest

• Pens or pencils

How to play: When planning a baby shower one of the first things you'll need to do is send an invitation to all the guests. With this game, when you send the invitations out, ask everyone to bring a baby photo of themselves. If most of the guests know each other quite well, you could ask them to bring pictures that the others might not have seen before. Collect all the photos at the beginning of the shower. Later on, display the pictures around the party room with a number attached to each one. Distribute numbered, blank lists, and invite each guest to guess who is pictured in each photo. This game is great because it will get people mingling and talking about how cute everyone was.

2. Fishing for Dummies

What you'll need:

• Large plastic tub or baby bath

• 10-15 dummies

• Prizes (optional)

How to play: To have some splashy fun with this baby shower game, fill a large tub – or a baby bath, if you happen to have one – with water, and place it in the kitchen or outside. Make some 'fishing rods' out of some bamboo canes, string and some non-sharp hooks (you can bend these out of paperclips or stiff wire if you have some lying around). Fill the tub with the dummies, and let the guests try their luck at fishing for them by catching the dummy's ring with their hook on the end of the string. If you want, you can buy some small prizes and number them, and have the dummies numbered, too. Afterwards, carefully wash and sterilise the dummies, place them in a box with a ribbon and give them to the mum-to-be.

3. Find the Guest!

What you'll need:

• Pen and paper for each guest

• Computer and printer, or photocopier

How to play: Before the party, look through your list of guests and make a note of any fun facts about each guest. You can ask around for tips, if you don't know some of the guests that well. Then, type up a list of the facts without saying who each fact belongs to. Print copies of the list and leave one on each guest's seat. When everyone arrives at your baby shower, guests will have to get to know each other quickly to find out which fact belongs to which guest. Set a timer for a few minutes then, at the end, the guest with the most correct answers wins the game.

4. What Am I?

What you'll need:

• Plain note cards

• A pen

• Safety pins for each guest

• Prize (optional)

How to play: Prepare for this baby shower game by making a card for each guest and writing a baby item on each card – for example, dirty nappy, dummy, cot and other baby-themed items. As guests arrive, pin a card on their back, and have them mingle, asking one another other a series of 'Yes' or 'No' questions to try to identify the item on their back. After someone has correctly guessed, the card can be taken off. You can either just use this game as a quick icebreaker, or give a prize to the first person who correctly guesses what item was pinned on their back.

5. Don't Say Baby

What you'll need:

• 5 clothes pegs per guest

How to play:

When your guests arrive, pin five clothes pegs onto each guest and offer a single instruction: Don't say 'baby'. Have your guests keep their ears open, and if they hear anyone say the word 'baby,' they get to take away one of that person's clothes pegs. The guest with the most pegs left at the end of the baby shower is the winner. This simple baby shower game is fun, and it encourages guests to interact in an interesting way. Also, the mum-to-be might get some inspiration on cute nicknames to call her little one.

Funny Baby Shower Games

6. Because I Said So!

What you'll need:

• Pens and paper slips for each guest

• Bowl to collect the slips

How to play: Ask guests to write down a saying or piece of advice that they associate with their mum or dad on a slip of paper. The sayings should be short, for example: 'Watching too much telly will give you square eyes', 'It costs nothing to smile!' or 'Never eat cheese before going to bed'. Then, put all the slips in a bowl, mix them up, and let everyone draw one (making sure no one draws her own saying). Have fun guessing who wrote each saying and whether she would say it to her own child.

7. Don't Drop the (Egg) Baby

What you'll need:

• 1 egg (hardboiled) for each guest

• Paints, food colouring, markers, etc.

• Wooden spoon for each guest

• Plenty of space

• Prize or trophy (optional)

How to play: Ask your shower guests to decorate an egg to look like a baby, using paints, food colouring, pens or other decorations. Then organise a race in which each guest carries the egg 'baby' on a spoon. The spoon can be held in the hand or between the teeth, and the race can be a simple race to the finish or a relay race. Play for the first slice of cake or award a small prize or trophy to the winner.

8. Ice, Ice Baby!

What you'll need:

• Ice cube tray

• Tiny plastic babies – 1 for each guest (you can probably get these from a party store or pound shop)

How to play: For a unique baby shower game, place the plastic babies in the ice tray, pour water over them, and freeze the night before. When all the guests have arrived, put an ice cube baby in each person's drink. Your guests will need to pay attention to the melting baby and shout 'My waters have broken!' (or another slogan of your choosing) when the baby completely melts out of the ice cube. The first who calls it wins. If you're combining the baby shower with a gender reveal party, you could modify this game by having everyone shout 'it's a boy!' or 'it's a girl!', depending on their guess. Later, when it's time for the big reveal, everyone who guessed right could be first in line for a slice of cake or some other treat!

Play Dough Babies

What you'll need:

• Play dough (purchased or homemade) in different colours

• Baking cases

How to play:

Get your guests' creative juices going with play dough. Give everyone a baking case and a few different coloured pieces of dough, and set a timer for 15 minutes. The aim of the game is to see who can create the cutest dough baby in the given time. You can make things fun by adding plastic knives, pencils, or anything else that can help your guests get artistic. Of course, mum decides the winner.

We're Having a Baby!

What you'll need:

• Balloons

• Pins

How to play:

Split the guests up into teams of four or five, and give each guest a balloon. When you say 'go', someone from each team must blow up the balloon and stick it under her shirt. Then, the second person must blow up a balloon and stick it under her shirt and so on until all the team members have balloons under their shirts. Then, using a pin, the first person must pop her own balloon through her shirt, and then the second person does the same, and so on. The first team to pop all the balloons wins the game. Or if you prefer not to use pins, you can try to bump your 'tummies' against each other to burst the balloons.

Baby Food Taste Test

What you'll need:

• Different baby food pots in different flavours

• Sticky labels

• Pen and paper

• A spoon for each guest

How to play:

Remove the label on each baby food pot and replace it with a sticky label and write a letter on it, like A, B, C, etc. Make a note of the flavour of each jar. When your guests are ready, give them each a spoon, a pen and a piece of paper and have them do a taste test and guess what's in each jar. The person who gets the most correct guesses (or the closest guesses) wins the game.

3. Lively Games

Nappy Change Relay Race

What you'll need (1 of the following for each team):

• 1 pack of newborn nappies

• 1 tub of baby wipes

• 1 baby blanket

• 1 baby dolls

How to play:

Assemble your baby shower guests in teams of the same number, and have each team stand in line. Each team should begin with its baby doll wearing a nappy and wrapped in a baby blanket. When you give the word to start, the first person in line in each team changes the nappy, removing the blanket and nappy, wiping the doll's bottom with a baby wipe, putting another nappy on, and rewrapping the doll in the blanket. Then the doll is handed to the next team member for changing, and the nappy changer goes to the back of the line. When everyone on a team has changed the doll's nappy once, that team has won.

Balloon Baby Twister

What you'll need:

• Balloons

• Twister game (mat and spinner)

How to play:

Have each participant blow up at least one balloon and place it under her shirt to make the 'baby'. Then play a hilariously awkward game of Twister. You can give prizes for the most twisted pose, most balloons carried under the shirt, and the least number of popped or dropped balloons. Let the mum-to-be sit in a chair and be the judge while enjoying the fun.

Hang the Nappy

What you'll need (for each team):

• 1-2 packs of newborn nappies

• Mini clothes pegs

• Pieces of string two to three yards long

How to play:

Make two or three little clothes lines – you can either prop them up on sticks or have one or two members of each team hold the ends of the string. Split your guests into competing teams, set a timer, and have them hang up as many nappies as possible. The team with the most nappies on the line wins.

Wrap the Mummy

What you'll need (for each team):

• 1 loo roll

How to play:

Split your guests into teams, and have one person be the model for the 'mummy'. However, instead of making an Egyptian mummy, you're creating a nappy out of loo roll by wrapping the 'mummy' with the loo paper. Set the clock to count down for five minutes and see which team can make the best nappy.

Baby Shower Bingo

What you'll need:

• Bingo cards (with 3x3 squares)

• Small stickers or pens

How to play:

Before the party, print out our baby bingo sheet and give one to each guest. Hand each guest a card, which should be unique for everyone with a different combination of gifts. Then, as the mum-to-be opens her gifts, guests can mark off any items received with a sticker or cross it out with a pen. The first guest to complete a row, column, or diagonal wins!

The Price Is Right

What you'll need:

• Pictures of baby items cut from a catalogue or printed out — they can even be from the mum-to-be's registry wish list

• Small gifts for the winners

• Pen and paper for the guests

How to play:

Lay out the pictures of the baby-related items, and give your guests a pen and paper. You can pick up each item and give a description and have your guests write down a price as a guess. Who Said What?

What you'll need:

• Printed copies of our downloadable he said/she said game

• Pens

How to play:

Give copies of the questions to the mum-to-be and her partner before the party, and ask them to write down their answers. During the shower, give copies of the questions to all the guests, and have them use their imagination to fill in the blanks with what they think mum or dad said in answer to each question. The guest who guesses the answers closest to what mum or dad said wins the game.

Wishes for Baby

What you'll need:

How to play:

Hand your guests a sheet and a pen, and have them fill in the blanks with wishes and predictions about the baby's future (for example: 'Your parents will be proud of you because…'). Let them know they can make their answers as funny or as sentimental as they'd like. Once finished, have people read out their answers to the first question, and vote for the best answer. The winner gets a point, and then you can move on to the next item on the list. The person with the highest score wins a prize.

5. Guessing Games

Baby Birthday Pool

What you'll need:

• Pens and paper for each guest, or

• 1 printed calendar of the expected birth month to pass around

How to play:

This baby shower standby is always a hit. Before beginning the game, ask the mum-to-be to reveal her anticipated due date. Remind everyone that only 5 percent of babies are born exactly on their due date! Then, ask each guest to predict the day and the time the baby will be born, and write their prediction on the paper or calendar. You can promise to give a prize to each person who picks the correct day and also to the person who most closely picks the time. Don't forget to send those prizes out after the baby is born.

Guess the Famous Mum

What you'll need:

• Name tags with the names of famous mothers printed on each

How to play:

Before your guests arrive, write or print the names of some famous mothers onto name tags for each guest. You could choose a category like mothers in fiction, mothers from current or classic TV programmes or films, or anything you wish. When your guests arrive, attach a name tag to the back of each guest, without letting the guest see the name. Ask everyone to walk around and ask 'Yes' or 'No' questions of the other guests to figure out whose name is on her back. It's a great icebreaker, and it may help guests who aren't acquainted find some common ground.

Do You Know What It Is?

What you'll need:

• 10 paper bags

• 10 baby items (like a nappy, dummy, etc.)

• Pen and paper for each guest

How to play:

Before the party, put a baby item into each bag, and number the bags. At the party, hand out the sheets of paper and pens to the guests, then start passing the bags out one by one. The guest must take a guess what they think is in each bag without opening it, and write it down; however, shaking and feeling the bag is allowed. After the guesses have been scribbled on the paper, ask the mum-to-be to do the great reveal; the guest with the most correct guesses is the winner.

How Old Was Mum?

What you'll need:

• Photos of the mum-to-be at different ages

• Pen and paper for each guest

How to play:

Arrange the pictures of the mum-to-be on a board or a table, and place a number next to each picture. Ask the guests to write the numbers in the order of age, and see who gets the most correct.

6. Layette Design Games

Decorate the T-shirt

What you'll need:

• Plain T-shirts or babygrows for each guest

• Fabric markers or non-toxic fabric paints

How to play:

Ask each guest to decorate an outfit for the new baby. If you like, have the mum-to-be relax in another room during the decorating time. When everyone is finished, spread the finished products out on a table and ask the mum-to-be to guess which guest decorated each one.

Make a Baby Quilt

What you'll need:

• Pre-cut squares of light-coloured fabric

• Fabric markers or non-toxic fabric paints

How to play:

A baby blanket makes a great keepsake, so why not get friends and family involved in making one? Give each guest a square of fabric to decorate for the new baby. You can decorate the squares at the party, or send guests their square in advance, and ask them to bring their decorated square to the shower. If you decide to do the decorating beforehand, then at the party, you can ask the group to arrange the squares (you'll need to have some extra squares, perhaps in a patterned fabric or contrasting plain colour) and make a quilt pattern. After the party, you can assemble the quilt yourself or send it to an expert quilter to put together. Remember this memento is intended for decoration only, and shouldn't be placed in the cot.

Nappy Notes

What you'll need:

• A large box of newborn nappies

• Different coloured permanent markers

How to play:

Give each guest a nappy and a marker pen, and have her write a funny quote, joke, words of encouragement, or anything creative on the back of the nappy. Then, give the box of personalised nappies to the parents-to-be for inspiration during a late-night nappy change!

Art for the Baby

What you'll need:

• Mini canvases or paper

• Paint

• Markers

• Decorative craft items, like stickers or glitter

How to play:

Put the supplies out on the table, and have some old newspaper handy to put under the paintings to make cleaning up easier. Have all your guests create art for the baby's nursery. Encourage imaginations to run wild — they can produce drawings, inspirational quotes, or anything that they think would be great for the nursery.

7. Word Games

Baby Word Unscramble

What you'll need:

• Scrambled word lists (one for each guest)

• Pens or pencils

• Timer

How to play:

Choose between 10 and 20 common words associated with babies — pram, cradle, nappy, etc. Then, make a list of these words with their letters all mixed up — mrap, edclra, ypann. Hand out copies of the scrambled word list to all the guests. Ask them to unscramble the letters and write down the real words as quickly as they can. Set a timer for 5 minutes, and see who can unscramble the most words during that time.

Baby Name Maker

What you'll need:

• Pens and paper for each guest

• Timer

How to play:

Write down the names of the expecting parents (first and last names) on a sheet of paper and distribute to each guest. Then, set a timer for 5 or 10 minutes. Ask guests to see how many names for the new baby they can make using only the letters in the parents' names. ABC Blocks

What you'll need:

• Blank wooden blocks (you can get these from a craft shop)

• Permanent markers

How to play:

Give each guest a block (or more) and ask her to decorate it with different letters of the alphabet. Just make sure everyone does something different until you have a range from A to Z. This not only lets your guests get creative, but it makes a cute keepsake for the mum-to-be and her little one.

8. Trivia Games

All About Mum

What you'll need:

• Prepared list of trivia questions

• Notepad and pen for recording answers and results

How to play:

Before the baby shower, prepare a list of questions about the mum-to-be, with her help, of course. The questions can focus on fun facts from her babyhood/childhood, or her present life, or both. Examples of questions:

• What time of day was she born?

• What is the name of her favourite childhood pet?

• What's the name of her primary school?

• Where did the expectant parents meet?

At the baby shower, read the questions out loud (or ask the mum-to-be to read them), and have the guests call out the answers. Designate one person to be in charge of noting who guesses correctly. The guest with the most correct answers wins.

Firstborn Children of Famous People

What you'll need:

• List of famous parents (copies for each guest)

• 1 answer key

• Pens or pencils

How to play:

Think of at least 10 famous parents from British history, pop culture, or a category of your choice. Then do some research, and write down the name of the eldest child of each parent (this is your answer key). Distribute a list of the parents' names to your guests. Ask everyone to write down the name of the eldest child next to the parent's name. See who can correctly name the greatest number of children.

Nursery Rhyme Knowledge

What you'll need:

• Paper

• Pens

• Computer and printer, or a photocopier

How to play:

Type out snippets from well-known nursery rhymes, but leave the end off, or leave parts of it blank, and print enough copies for your baby shower guests. When your guests arrive, distribute the worksheets and ask them to fill in the blanks of the missing nursery rhymes. Give them five minutes to complete the sheet; whoever gets the most right wins the game.

Name the Baby Tune

What you'll need:

• A playlist of baby songs

• Pen

• Paper

How to play:

There is no prep work needed for this simple game; just press play once everyone is ready. Have the guests shout out the name of the song, and make a note of who gets it right the fastest. The person who guesses the most correct answers wins the game.

Do You Know Your Cartoon Babies?

What you'll need:

• Paper

• Pens

• A computer and printer, or a photocopier

How to play:

Test your guests on the cartoons they used to love as kids. Draw a line down the middle of a sheet of paper, and write the names of some cartoon/animated feature mums on one side, leaving the baby side blank. Make copies for your guests, and hand them out at the party. Ask guests to fill in the name of the cartoon babies on the right-hand side.

9. Nappy Games

What's in a Nappy?

What you'll need:

• Variety of small baby items (socks, sun hat, thermometer, bottle, etc.)

• 1 package of disposable nappies

• Tape

• Marker

How to play:

Before the shower, gather a selection of small baby items. Then take some disposable nappies and tape them securely around each item so the item can't be seen, and write a number on each nappy. (Keep a master list of the numbers and what's in each the nappy bundle.) At the shower, line up the nappy bundles, and have guests try to guess what's inside each one by feeling it. Of course, the thicker the nappy layer the harder it is to guess. The guest with the greatest number of correct guesses wins.

Nappy Surprise

What you'll need:

• A few different kinds of chocolate bars

• 1 package of nappies

• Pen and paper

How to play:

Before your shower guests arrive, heat each chocolate bar in the microwave and smear the gooey mess onto a nappy, keeping track of which chocolate bar goes on which nappy. After your guests arrive, have them do a 'sniff' test of each nappy and guess which kind of chocolate is on each one, writing down their guesses on a sheet of paper. The winning 'nose' is the one with the greatest number of correct guesses.

Nappy Raffle

What you'll need:

• Raffle tickets

• Prizes for the draw

How to play:

When you invite your guests to the baby shower, ask them to bring at least one package of nappies, letting them know that the more packs of nappies they bring, the more raffle tickets they will get to participate in the game! At the shower, give your guests one ticket for each pack they bring, and then do a raffle draw where guests are in for the chance to win some small prizes, and the lucky parents end up with the packs of nappies.

10. Preparing for Parenthood Games

Mummy Brain Teaser

What you'll need:

• Basket or tray

• At least 20 baby-related items

• Paper and pens for each guest

How to play:

Fill a basket or tray with small baby-related objects before the shower. During the shower, ask the mum-to-be to quickly walk around the room and show everyone the basket/tray. After the quick viewing, hide the basket in another room and distribute paper and pens. Ask everyone to write down all of the items they saw in the basket. See who has the best memory and can recall the most items.

Supermum in Training

What you'll need:

• Cordless or mobile phone

• Approximately 8 pairs of unmatched baby socks

• Stack of nappies

• Baby doll

• Timer

How to play:

Each of your guests will have a turn trying to be Supermum. When you say 'Go', the Supermum candidate has to pick up the phone and cradle it between her ear and her shoulder. At the same time, she must correctly sort the socks into matched piles and change the baby's nappy. She cannot put down the phone while she is doing this. Before the next guest begins her turn, mix up the socks again. Time each guest to see how long it takes to complete the tasks − no mistakes allowed, of course.

11. Animal Games

Pick a Duck

What you'll need:

• 1 toy duck for each guest

• Baby bathtub

How to play:

Fill a baby bathtub with water and put the ducks in it. On the bottom of one duck, make a distinctive, special marking. Ask each guest to pick a duck, and the one who picks the special duck wins a door prize. After the shower, donate at least a few ducks to the mum-to-be for all those baths to come.

Baby Animal Names

What you'll need:

• Master list of animals

• Answer key with the baby names of each animal – You can download or print our game sheet for this baby animal game

• Pens and paper for guests

How to play:

Here's a chance to test your guests' knowledge of the animal kingdom. Make a list of 10 to 20 animals, and ask your guests to write down the word for that animal's baby. Do your research beforehand so you have an answer key. Some unusual ones include:

• Dolphin (baby is a calf)

• Crocodile (baby is a hatchling)

• Swan (baby is a cygnet)

When everyone is finished, read the correct words out loud, and have guests score themselves. Give a prize to the guest with the highest score.
